September 98.
Unless that ubermiraculous Sloan pdx date comes through, I'm savin' my rock money to go up to UVic to see them play.
Maroons, Sue Garner (??), Spinanes-- La Luna
I must thank Veronica, who convinced me to go to this show, and also for knowing the right people (wink wink, nudge nudge).
Ok, the Maroons. Not my favorite band. They're very cute, and I think actually they have gotten better over the years. I just don't like their music that much.
Sue Garner or Gardiner (it was hard to hear over the bar noise but I am pretty sure it's Garner) was pretty cool. She's a good singer. Unfortunately I couldn't hear her that well, and I wasn't really in the right mood to listen to her reflective-type music.
It was strange seeing the Spinanes after all this time. I haven't seen them since Scott left. And I haven't seen Rebecca play Spinanes stuff since she left town . It was worth it just to hear the super odd version of 'Hawaiian Baby', which I swear on my life is the only song that I ever have yelled out a request for. Repeatedly. There was some weirdness with the synthesizer on one of the old songs (as in 'why is she playing the synthesizer during this ballad, it sounds like a car turning over?') but other than that, it was great to see them back in town.
Systemwide, King Black Acid-- Jasmine Tree
This show continued the trend in cheap, good shows that I've seen lately. I was a bit leery of Systemwide before I showed up, for odd paranoic reasons best kept to myself and that have nothing to do with reality. I really enjoyed them despite the fact that they are more on the dub/reggae side than bands that I usually like. Plus they did a cover of The Clash's 'The Call Up.' I heart The Clash.
I was glad that I enjoyed KBA as well. My friends have been fans of theirs forever, and it would've been really awkward if I hated them. I was worried that since all of their songs are long that I would get bored, but that didn't happen.
Jem took a bunch of polaroids of the show including a very cute one of KBA's Daniel and the Dandys Peter.
PS Mental note: consume more mai tais.
