Show Reviews
July 98.

Okay.  Let's see if I can remember anything at all about last month.

Firewater, Man or Astroman? (Alpha Clone project)-- La Luna

What kind of band would give all their stuff to some other people, come up with a really whacked out story and send them on tour? Why, Man or Astroman? of course.   Apparently a bunch of people already knew that it wouldn't be Dexter X, Starcrunch, Birdstuff, and Coco.  I didn't, but I wasn't surprised.  Some of my friends got really angry about it, but I figure that that's what you get when you go to a Man or Astroman show.  I did miss the theremin, but I was thoroughly entertained.

I don't remember that much about Firewater, but they were interesting enough that the entire bar contingent was watching them instead of making rude comments about them, which is a good sign.

Kung Fu, ICU, The Feelings, Imperial Teen-- Zoot Suite

Kung Fu is the Slintiest band I've ever seen, and since there's no chance in hell that I'll ever see Slint, I was pretty happy to see them.

ICU did their usual excellent, if low drama set.  No complaints from me, as long as I get to hear 'em play.

The Feelings.   I swear at least two of them are Reedies.   The lead singer is super intense.  Their style was noticeably more lo-fi than any of the other bands playing.  I wasn't sure whether this was annoying, because by this time I was getting pretty dehydrated and was having trouble enjoying myself.

Imperial Teen has one of the guys from Faith No More in it.  Also two women who are punk veterans, but I couldn't name their previous bands if you held a gun to my head.  The non-faith-no-more guy, who's apparently never been in a band is a dead ringer for Pat Smear.  They have a shoe deal.  They play punk pop music.   They are a pretty good band.  Darcy likes them a whole lot more than I do, but that's OK too.

Art from Everclear-- La Luna PR shindig

I'll admit it.  It's my guilty little secret.  I don't hate Everclear, or that Art guy (the lead singer).  This is very uncool of me, according to various Portland cool people that I hang out with.  In fact I really like a couple of their songs.  So when presented with the chance to get free snacks, free (good) beer, and a free show (without having to deal with the normal teeming masses-- that was key) I was on it like Blue Bonnet.  Since it was a PR shindig, the place had tables and chairs on the lower level, drastically reducing the number of schmooze participants.   It was fun.  So there.

*ho hum*
