How I Spent my Summer Vacation
--or--
Why the hell didn't you go see X this month like all the cool people?
I spent my summer vacation being a geek. I wore sandals with socks, I forgot about eyeliner, and decided to tape every episode of Rhoda. I got rid of my psychiatrist and decided that crossing state lines made me less psychotic than psychotherapy. I kept ending up in Seattle. I made soup and brownies. I played with the computer and talked about how I have a big crush on a cartoon character (Trent from Daria). I lived for Law and Order reruns. I decided rock schmoozing would have to go on hold for awhile while I pretended to be an adult and that I didn't care about petty things like coolness and the ultimate bleach job. Shhh. Don't tell. It's all a cover for me to get repierced.
The Pills, The Gimmicks, The Makers -- La Luna balcony
One word. Damn.
I haven't been to a show this packed with rock in a long, long time. Every Pills song reminded me of 'Kick out the Jams.' The Gimmicks fell down and writhed on stage so many times that I stopped counting-- the guitarist even did a somersault while playing. The Makers experience can only be compared to a) seeing the Blues Explosion for the first time or b) seeing Courtney Taylor for the first time (live, in person, duh). I guess you had to be there.
Calexico, Dirty Three-- Satyricon
Calexico reminded me of other bands that I love without actually sounding like them. The lineup of guitar and drums reminded me of the first Spinanes album, while the lyrics reminded me of old Soul Coughing (the tone poem type stuff, i.e. Screenwriter's Blues). Both musicians had mad skill. I didn't know anything about. them beforehand, but they blew me away. Dirty Three did a great job, as usual, with Warren's rambling and always funny patter balancing out the lack of lyrics (not that I mind). They played until the very last minute. That's value for money.
Dandy Warhols, Curve-- La Luna
It's beginning to piss me off. I want to see opening bands, but I wish they were the main band. Case in point this show. I love Curve, don't get me wrong, and in high school I would have killed to see them. Unfortunately they played a really dead set. It was just plain sterile. Toni is just as gorgeous as you'd expect and her eyes take up her whole head. *Great* eye makeup. The new songs aren't really my style (except 'On the Wheel' -- but it isn't really new). I thought at first it was just my earplugs cutting out the good noise. Nope. There was no good noise to cut out.
Anyway, the Dandys played a great set, almost as long as Curve's (which was pretty short). Courtney almost ended up playing 'Free Bird' and Zia sang a cute kid's song about her toenail at the end of the show. I had a really lame conversation with Peter after , 'cause he was hanging around the merchandise table and I figured it was a good a chance to make an ass of myself. Woohoo, I touched his arm. I'm *so* lame.
