Richmond Fontaine, Dandy Warhols-- Satyricon I gave up (free) dinner at L'Auberge just so I could stare at Courtney Taylor. And then I did it again the next night. And I'd do it again. It was an eventful evening. Jemiah fell over into a drum kit--she's OK-- Sandy's cigs got stolen as did Zia's cocktails (from the stage no less). Many cocktails were had by all present and it all got sorted out in the end. There was a Chapel Hill band on before Richmond Fontaine. I can't remember what they were called, but they get style points for wearing matching frilly tux shirts. They were good. Richmond Fontaine kicked it country style. I've never really thought of pdx as a country kind of town, but by the time the band finished their set everybody was commenting how they wished *they* could play slide guitar too. The Dandys are a beautiful thing and a joy forever. Sunset Valley, Dandy Warhols-- La Luna balcony I was definitely crankier at this show than I was at the previous one. It could've been the freaky porn that they were playing in the bar, PMS, the porter/pounder misunderstanding, or the sheer number of people who I didn't want to talk to. That and I couldn't see the bands too well from where I was standing. Sunset Valley was cool. They have an early XTC, Pixies sort of sound. They rock with three Xs. Go see them already. The Dandys weren't quite as animated as the last time, from what I could tell (like I said, I couldn't see a damn thing for most of the evening). But much rocking was to be done. Did I mention I have no vocabulary left? Echoplex, Swoon 23-- EJ's OK. Here's the deal. I woke up the day of this show, fully intending to go to the psychiatrist, go to the store, go to school, and meet my friends at EJ's. But then my car got stolen, I missed lunch, missed dinner, my friends didn't show up *and* I walked home from EJ's. Cranky? Just a little. But I decided to go and have some beers anyway, after all I didn't have to *drive* anywhere. Luckily, the show was good. Otherwise, someone would've gotten punched, and it wouldn't be me. Echoplex is one of those new school My Bloody Valentine-influenced bands. Every single band that I've seen lately that's into MBV has rocked, and Echoplex was no exception. Plus one of the people in the band is friends with Veronica, so of course they're cool. Swoon 23 played a short set, as they weren't actually the main act. The ever-present Robo bottle was (of course) present. They played 'I wanna be your dog,' which made me (almost) feel happy. I left before The Bella Low went on 'cause I was getting tired, I didn't have a ride home, and -- most importantly-- I didn't want to miss Rhoda. |
