Over the years, she slimmed down, and when she returned home to New York for a visit at the start of Rhoda in the fall of 1974, she was a more attractive and self-confident person. The visit turned permanent when she met and fell in love with Joe Gerard. Joe was the owner of the New York Wrecking Company, divorced, and the father of a 10-year-old son. Rhoda moved in with sister Brenda, since living with parents Ida and Martin wasn't working out, and got a job as a window dresser. Romance blossomed and, in a special hour telecast on October 28, 1974, Rhoda Morgenstern became Rhoda Gerard. The newlyweds moved into the same building in which Brenda and Rhoda had been living. Joe went off every day to the office while Rhoda was a relatively unoccupied housewife. Boredom precipitated her decision to start her own window- dressing business with a high school friend, shy Myrna. With Rhoda happily married, the comedy shifted to her chubby sister, Brenda, a bank teller with constant problems trying to get a boyfriend, a younger version of the Rhoda who started on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970. After two years of stories about wedded bliss the producers of Rhoda decided that a happily married couple was just not as funny as two single people trying to cope with the world. In order to create more flexibility in Rhoda's role, she and Joe separated soon after the start of the 1976-1977 season. Now they were able to make new friends, suffer the adjustments of living apart, and again deal with the world of the lonely "single." Joe was gradually phased out of the show, preparatory to the inevitable divorce, and Rhoda joined her sister at mixers and singles bars. She found a new friend in 39-year-old divorced airline stewardess Sally Gallagher, and both she and Brenda were frequently escorted by platonic friend Gary Levy. In the middle of that season Rhoda began an off-again, on-again romance with egocentric Las Vegas-based entertainer Johnny Venture. Opening credits in the last two seasons show Rhoda entering a building under a covered sidewalk with address "three thirty two." The "Kiss Your Epaulets Goodbye" episode reveals the apartment building address is 332 West 64th Street. The 1977-1978 season brought another raft of changes. Rhoda found a new job working at the Doyle Costume Company, a run-down business struggling to survive. Jack Doyle was the owner of the company and his assistant was Ramon. Brenda had a new boyfriend in Benny Goodwin--who replaced the infrequently seen Las Vegas musician Nick Lobo, played by Richard Masur, who had romanced her 1975-77, and mother Ida had just returned from a year's traveling around the country. By the start of the last season Ida too was single, having been deserted by Martin. 109 episodes as originally telecast, 110 episodes in syndication. Season One ---------- 001. "Five for the Road" (Part I) Sunday 4/16/78 8:00 PM ET W: Charlotte Brown, Allan Katz & Don Reo D: Tony Mordente Rhoda is trying to find out why Jack has been in a funk all week. Finally he reveals that this coming Sunday would have been his and his late wife Peggy's 23rd wedding anniversary. Rhoda decides he shouldn't be at home alone on this sad day. She invites him over to her place for one of Ida's homecooked pot roast dinners--his favorite. He reminisces of a restaurant in upstate New York that he and his wife frequented--The Quincy House. Meanwhile, Sunday arrives and everyone (Jack, Benny and Brenda) arrives at Rhoda's. Suddenly, and quite dramatically, Ida enters and says she was mugged on the subway--the masked man got away with her pot roast and vegetables and the Tupperware that still had the burp in it! Distraught that he won't have pot roast after all, Rhoda insists the gang head to The Quincy House for that special meal. Suddenly, the sunshine turns to storms and Benny gets the car stuck in the mud. But, good luck--they found the restaurant. Bad luck--its long been closed and they're trapped for the night in the deserted eatery. Valerie Harper, Kenneth McMillan, Nancy Walker, Julie Kavner, Ray Buktenica. #7177. [Note: This is the only two-part episode of the series. However, in syndication, MTM has split ''Rhoda's Wedding,'' which originally aired as a one-hour special during the first season.] 097. "Five for the Road" (Conclusion) Sunday 4/23/78 8:00 PM ET W: Charlotte Brown, Allan Katz & Don Reo D: Tony Mordente The gang finally gets into the abandoned restaurant and Rhoda tries to organize the stranded group. Ida insists they pool their resources. She has celery sticks in her purse. Benny has a stick of gum, Jack has a roll of Certs breath mints--no, make those candy mints! Brenda has an oversized chocolate bar. All Rhoda has is some lip gloss that tastes great. Ida puts all the items in her purse for safe keeping, but someone snatches the candy bar. Ida makes everyone take the "Hello" breath test. Brenda fails and is left in isolation on the front porch. As morning breaks, Benny finds a case of homecanned peaches in the kitchen. Just as they are enjoying their meal, a road worker comes in and announces that they have to leave so the restaurant can be torn down for the new highway. Jack is upset by the news, but Rhoda reminds him that it is the memory that will keep the restaurant alive in all their minds.
